Full Description

For details of tenements see main report.

{4} The 1839 valuation of Wellingborough indicates that the fully redeveloped and re-established Pebble Lane contained: 16 cottages at an annual rent of £1 10s each; Sportsman’s Arms curriers shop, £13 per annum; House and barn, £5 per annum; White Horse Inn, brewhouse, cellar etc, £10 per annum
House, wash-house, warehouse etc, £23 per annum; House and shoe warehouse, £12 per annum.

Unlike other streets it contained few stables and barns, the houses and cottages, which outnumber the commercial premises by 19:2, having little more than a rear yard attached. This is principally a domestic street in the post 1738 rebuild. The west side of Pebble Lane was demolished in 1931, the east side in 1937. A photograph of c1900 depicts this narrow thoroughfare in which the post 1738 ironstone buildings have all the cramped, cheek-by-jowl conditions of their half-timbered medieval predecessors.
