Abstract/Summary
Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned to carry out an historic building survey prior to the conversion of two outbuildings at the Grade II Listed Fairfield Lodge in Welford, Northamptonshire. Outbuilding A is situated adjacent to the main house and originally appears to have comprised a large open passageway with basket arch, flanked by two blocks of probable stable with arched openings. The passageway has since been blocked at its south end with two smaller doors inserted, and brick partitions have closed the archaed openings to form a store to the west and a garage to the east. The eastern building has been partially demolished to form a walled courtyard, and the remaining structures were re-roofed in the 1970s or 1980s. Outbuilding B is a two-storey building with a former laundry room on the ground floor with in-situ fireplace and heated wash-tub. The floor above has been replaced at some point as it sits on the back of a series of original notched joists. The proposed alterations will have a negligible impact on the surviving historic fabric and will seek wherever possible to retain and enhance the historic value of the buildings.
