Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Northamptonshire Archaeology on land at Collingtree, Northampton. Twenty of the 132 trenches excavated produced archaeological evidence, the remainder contained only remnant medieval to post-medieval plough furrows or were devoid of features. The evaluation identified the remains of a small enclosed Romano-British settlement sited on the first terrace above Wooton Brook to the north. The combination of the geophysical survey plot and the trenching suggests that although there is some evidence for modification and development within the settlement, occupation was relatively restricted in scale and duration. The archaeological remains are generally constrained to the eastern half of one of the evaluated fields within the development area. Two outlying features were also recorded beyond this settlement area, neither is thought to be related to its use, one dated to the mid to late Iron Age and the other, although undated, could be from a later period.
