Abstract/Summary

The proposals for development at the Northampton South SUE site include provision of a mix of residential, commercial and community uses together with the reconfiguration of the Collingtree Park golf course. The available archaeological, historic, and topographic information indicates that the site contains no designated heritage assets. A programme of archaeological fieldwork comprising geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation has been undertaken on the site. The geophysical survey was undertaken across the arable land and existing golf course and recorded three small late prehistoric/early Roman enclosed settlement sites, and the subsequent archaeological evaluation focussed on arable land indicated that the largest enclosed settlement was late Iron Age and early Roman in date. The geophysical survey recorded medieval ridge and furrow across the arable parts of the site. It is considered that the proposed development of this site could have an archaeological impact on the areas of known archaeological activity. Further archaeological mitigation work is likely to be required and could follow planning permission secured by an appropriately worded condition.
