Abstract/Summary
During July 2001, HAT carried out an archaeological excavation at Long Lodge Farm, Grendon. It followed a trial trench evaluation of the site and watching brief undertaken by HAT in August 2000 and subsequent excavation in August and September 2000 in an adjacent zone (Area B). The excavation revealed a number of archaeological features. Little diagnostic material was recovered during the investigation, excepting a few MIA/LIA sherds. A broken polished flint axe of Neolithic date was found within a pit. A large number of tree-throws were recorded across the site. The principal feature recorded was a large rectilinear enclosure with two entrances, in addition to a possible later co-axial boundary system. The project confirmed Iron Age activity on the edge of the sand and gravel ridge/island above the Nene palaeochannels and floodplain.
