Abstract/Summary

Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 33 hectares near Cosgrove, Northamptonshire in advance of a proposed development. Despite the site being located in a landscape of high archaeological potential only a single anomaly of probable archaeological origin has been identified by the survey; a barrow type feature which clearly corresponds with a circular cropmark. Numerous other cropmarks have not been identified as magnetic anomalies. The reason for this is not clear. Elsewhere anomalies consistent with historic agricultural activity including ridge and furrow cultivation, former boundaries, trackways and buildings have been identified across the site which may be of local historical interest. A system of pipes/drains is also recorded. Overall, based solely on the results of the geophysical survey, the archaeological potential of the site is assessed as low but locally moderate to high in the vicinity of the barrow.
