Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological investigation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between January and April 2006 at the request of RPS Planning Transport and Environment (on behalf of DIRFT Limited) at DIRFT West, Kilsby, Northamptonshire. Five areas within the development area, comprising 3.7ha in total, were subject to a programme of strip, map and record, followed by targeted excavation. A number of small pits and cremation burials probably dating to the Late Bronze Age/Early to Middle Iron Age were identified. However the majority of the excavated features dated to the Middle to Late Iron Age and appeared to represent a continuation of activity dating to this period previously identified elsewhere on the DIRFT site. Dense archaeological remains including numerous roundhouses, enclosures, ditches, pits and postholes was excavated according to a pre-determined sampling strategy. At the western end of the excavation area, the remains of part of a probable field system dating to the Romano-British period were identified. This document presents a quantification and assessment of the evidence recovered from the excavation. It considers the evidence collectively in its local, regional and national context, and presents an updated project design for a programme of post-excavation analysis to bring the results to appropriate publication.
