Abstract/Summary

An archaeological observation and recording exercise was carried out by Groundworks Archaeology on 29th June 2018 during site preparation for construction of an agricultural barn on land at Manor Farm, Hinton in the Hedges, Northamptonshire . The archaeological observation and recording exercise revealed a simple stratigraphy of modern plough-soil sealing subsoil which directly overlay the limestone bedrock. A single archaeological feature was identified, a linear cut aligned approximately north-east to south-west of Romano-British origin. Pottery within the fill was identified as Nene Valley colour coat and dated to the 2nd-4th centuries AD. Based on the HER mapping this feature is likely to be a continuation of the linear field boundaries described in paragraph 4.7 which were previously identified on aerial photographs. These linears were assumed to be of Romano-British orgin based on other finds in the vicinity, although this attribution was uncertain. The dating evidence recovered during this investigation has ascertained with a high degree of liklihood that these linear field boundaries are indeed Romano-British.
