SNN112266 - Village Farm, North Street, Titchmarsh, Northamptonshire: Historic Building Recording

This report presents the results of a programme of historic building recording undertaken by Witham Archaeology at Village Farm, North Street, Titchmarsh in Northamptonshire. The project was commissioned by Ross Thain Architects on behalf of The Society of Merchant Venturers as Endowment Trustee for St Monica Trust, in response to condition of planning permission and in accordance with advice provided by the archaeological adviser to East Northamptonshire District Council. The site lies off North Street in the north-eastern part of the village of Titchmarsh. The farm is shown on the 1886 Ordnance Survey Map, arranged around two courtyards facing to the south. Further buildings are shown to the west and to the north. The survey resulted in the recording of a number of traditional farm buildings scheduled for conversion to domestic use, as well further buildings and yards earmarked for demolition under the current scheme. The earliest buildings are probably a pair of barns forming the east and north sides of the northernmost courtyard, and a stable and granary located on the east side of the southern courtyard. The complex appears to have undergone a significant expansion in the mid to late 19th century, with the construction of a new stable, a shelter shed located close to the stable, a probable cattle shelter on the west side of the northernmost yard and probably another yard and cattle shelter to the west. The farmhouse probably dates from this period too. A new stable was constructed at the south-west corner of the complex, certainly after 1900 and probably in the first quarter of the 19th century
