Abstract/Summary
This document provides a report on a topographical earthwork survey and subsequent Strip, map and sample conducted by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS), on land south of Maidwell Hall School, Maidwell, Northamptonshire during July 2010. The site, which is to be levelled to rugby pitch, contained reasonably well preserved ridge and furrow (medieval strip field systems) as well as a later quarry pit. Previous geophysical survey and evaluation had also recorded evidence of Roman activity and an avenue associated with Maidwell Hall. In view of, the Planning Archaeologist for Northamptonshire County Council recommended a programme of archaeological work comprising of initial topographical survey to provide a permanent record of the earthworks and subsequent archaeological excavation during the groundworks. The results of the topographic survey showed there was two separate phases of ridge and furrow with the later phase extending into the quarry pit. The strip, map and sample exercise recorded a Late Iron pit and park of an Early Roman enclosure system. Also further evidence of the post-medieval avenue associated with Maidwell Hall
