Full Description
{1} Discrete positive anomalies representing pits of a possible archaeological origin can be noted within the survey area. A number of other positive rectilinear anomalies can be identified within the survey area.
{2} Trench 1 was positioned over two geophysical anomalies, which suggested concentric circles. A possible ditch was found towards the centre of the trench orientated in a south east - north west direction. It was 1.7m wide, 0.58m deep and had a minimum length of 3m. It had steep sloping sides and a narrow round base and contained small fragments of Roman greyware pottery, a flint scraper and flint flake.
A possible feature was seen in test pit 1. This was aligned south east to north west and was of unknown size and shape. It contained a single possible Palaeolithic flint flake.
A trial trench was positioned over the southern of the two possible enclosures but no archaeological features were revealed.
{3} The strip, map and sample exercise recorded a late Iron Age pit and part of an early Roman enclosure system. The fill of the late Iron Age pit contained abundant sherds of 'Belgic' pottery and animal bone as well as significant amounts of charcoal. The lack of artefacts in the ditches of the Roman enclosure indicate that it was located some distance away from settlement and may have been part of a field system.
