Abstract/Summary

MOLA (Museum of London) was commissioned by Manor Oak Homes to carry out archaeological trial trenching on land to the south and east of Grange Park, Northampton. The trenches specifically targeted features identified by geophysical survey identifying three specific areas of archaeological interest. The trenching identified prehistoric ring ditch monuments, including a henge, and a pit alignment occupying the ironstone ridge to the north of Field 3. A small Iron Age farmstead was located on the lower ground to the south-west (Field 1) that was probably established in the early Iron Age and continued into the late Iron Age. Evidence for the remains of a shrunken medieval village (Quinton) was found in the south of Field 3 that was re-established in the post-medieval period and can be seen illustrated on 19th and 20th-century Ordnance Survey maps. Ridge and furrow cultivation was identified across the landscape surviving to varying degrees.
