Abstract/Summary

Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface potential of a c. 106.1ha area of land northeast of Flore, Northamptonshire. A magnetic gradiometer survey was successfully undertaken across the survey area. The survey has detected anomalies indicative of probable and possible archaeological activity. This activity is primarily concentrated in the centre of the survey area following a north to south and east to west orientation along a high rising plateau. These include anomalies suggestive of multiphase settlement structures such as ring ditches, rectilinear enclosures, former land divisions, trackways and bridleways. Further anomalies suggest that fragmentary remains of archaeological features extend more widely across the survey area. Possible postholes, pits and/or quarrying have also been identified. However, a clear distinction between these anomalies is not certain. Anomalies relating to the historical agricultural use of the landscape have also been identified across the survey area and indicate multiple ridge and furrow regimes and former mapped field boundaries. Geological variations were also detected throughout the data. Magnetic Interference from modern sources such as green waste, electric pylons and extant fencing is limited, but locally significant.
