Abstract/Summary

Magnitude Surveys Ltd was commissioned to access the potential for sub-surface archaeological remains of a c. 36.41ha area of land at Former Furtho Pit, Old Stratford, Northamptonshire. A fluxgate magnetometer and an aerial photogrammetric survey was successfully completed across the survey area. Several large areas of magnetic interference in the north and west of the survey area have been caused by extraction, associated spoil and the dumping of waste. In the remaining areas archaeological activity has been recorded as, linear, rectilinear, and discrete anomalies, forming probable and possible ditched enclosures with internal divisions. Agricultural activity has been identified by the geophysical and aerial survey in the form of ridge and furrow cultivation and modern agricultural trends and trackways. Anomalies relating to modern activity have been interpreted as services and the structural remains of a former water treatment plant. Anomalies of undetermined origin have been identified in the form of a rectilinear anomaly detected on the geophysical and aerial surveys.
