Abstract/Summary
In July 2023 two distinct ranges of historic farm buildings at Grange Farm, Brixworth, Northamptonshire, were recorded in their ‘as found’ state, prior to conversion for residential usage. The historic buildings are classed as Non-designated Heritage Assets. One of the ranges consists of a stone-built coach house and stable block. Its period of construction is vague, though it underwent substantial alteration in the mid-19th century. The block stands close to a stone-built farmhouse which has Georgian façades, yet evidence of originating in the 16th or 17th century. The house (and farm) was formerly known as Moulton’s Lodge or Brixworth Lodge. The other range consists of a block of mid-19th century farm buildings, which formed the ‘back’ of an E-shaped courtyard ‘model’ farm, created post-1846. The farmstead plan is one of the predominant types of the Victorian era. This range was essentially for crop processing and storage, fodder storage, and the housing of implements and vehicles. The report provides a descriptive and illustrative account of the interiors and exteriors of each building in their existing ‘as found’ state by means of photographic catalogue, scaled elevations and plans. The report lays the foundation for historical appreciation of the buildings. Drawing on Sales Particulars and contemporary newspaper articles, the historical account plots the tenancies of Grange Farm over a 125 year period (c. 1824-1950), against the backdrop of the period of ‘Victorian High Farming’ through to the ‘Great Agricultural Depression’ and into the early 20th century.
