Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on behalf of Ian and Vic Muirhead, in advance of construction of a new dwelling in an area of archaeological potential, near to Barby Motte Castle, c.30m to the southeast. The two trenches (25m and 15.5m) were excavated down to the geological natural. Evidence of ridge and furrow ploughing was present in both trenches. This implies that the site was within the open fields from the medieval or later periods. Evidence of the 19th century buildings which stood previously on the site, was found in the trenches in the form of a brick pathway in trench. Further building evidence in the form of fragments of brick and roof tiles were found in the topsoil in trench 2 and a modern layer within the western half of trench 1. An undated gully was similarly aligned to the furrows but was narrower and shallower. Ditch 204 which yielded animal bone fragments, predated the 19th century pathway but was otherwise undated. It was aligned North-South, parallel with the road and property boundaries.
