Abstract/Summary
Level 2 historic building recording was carried out prior to the demolition of 20th century side and rear extensions to the Grade II listed Avon Cottage on behalf of Leigh Taylor. Formerly part of an 18th century stone-built terrace of one-bay cottages, Avon Cottage and Well Cottage were detached as two-bay buildings when the intervening bay was demolished, probably between 1960 and 1970: A blocked doorway is visible on the east side of the Avon Cottage facade. Warwick House, to the west, was originally also a terrace of three one-bay cottages as evidenced by the butt joints between the cottages and blocked doorways in the right and left bays. The removal of Avon Cottage’s rear and side extensions revealed that both extensions have an exterior ironstone skin over an interior brick wall admixed with stone in the rear extension. The walls of the rear extension were 0.50 to 0.60 m thick, and in the side extension 0.40 m thick. The rear extension was used as a coal ‘cellar’ and WC prior to 2003, when the side extension was in use as a storage space.
