Full Description

{1} Cottage. C18. Coursed ironstone and limestone rubble, thatch roof, flanking brick stacks. 2 storeys; 3 bays. Entrance in second bay from left has C20 gabled timber porch and part-glazed plank door with wood lintel, 2-light casement window with wood lintel on either side. Similar windows on the first floor. Interior not inspected. Said to have been part of a row of cottages, including Well Cottage (q.v.), the central portion having been demolished c.1970.

{3} Undated photo;

{4} The cottage between Avon Cottage and Well Cottage was demolished around 1960 according to Stamper. Avon Cottage is an 18th century, Grade-II listed building. The rear extension abutting the back of the house was built in 1960 to accommodate coal storage and the WC. The recording of the exterior and interior ground floor of Avon Cottage itself, revealed a blocked entrance in the east corner of the front elevation, next to the inglenook fireplace in the living room. This suggests that Avon Cottage was divided originally into two cottages.
