Title | ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVALUATION REPORT: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY BY MAGNETOMETRY ON LAND AT THE GREEN, GREAT HOUGHTON, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE |
Author/Originator | Robert Evershed |
Date/Year | 2023 |
Abstract/Summary
Stantec UK Limited (Northampton) commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land at The Green, Great Houghton, Northamptonshire, prior to submission of a planning application for a residential development. The site lies within an area with high potential for archaeological activity, with a dense and complex pattern of probable archaeological features recorded from cropmarks, as well as Iron Age activity previously revealed during earlier archaeological work on the site. The survey revealed many features likely to represent Iron Age and medieval activity. There appeared to be a couple of specific areas within Field 4 which represented potential settlements, with many enclosure ditches, as well as a couple of rectangular enclosures slightly further away. There were also several circular features which likely represent the locations of former Iron Age roundhouses.Within Field 5 there was a large amount of archaeological activity, with a number of curvilinear and rectangular enclosures as well as potential roundhouses, although this time spread across a larger area. There was a circular feature potentially representing an earlier Bronze Age barrow as well as possible pits or former quarrying activity. The survey also identified likely ridge and furrow cultivation on a number of different alignments and buried modern services within all of the fields surveyed
