Title A Lidar based appraisal of the Roman Roads in Northamptonshire
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2025

Abstract/Summary

This paper appraises the routes and likelihoods of Roman roads in Northamptonshire based primarily on their appearance on lidar data, but also referring to evidence from excavation, county HER records, aerial photography and crop marks. The paper builds on the work already undertaken by the author in the Kettering area (Kirk 2024) which has demonstrated this approach is viable for detecting unknown Roman roads in the Northamptonshire countryside. The work identifies several new Roman roads and alternate routes for existing roads and questions the existence of some routes in the south of the county, as previously identified by the Viatores (1964).
