Monument record 1760/1 - Possible Road Route: Lowick to Irchester
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Roman road, Viatores route 570. A Roman road parallel to the River Nene on its north bank. The road has been identified during archaeological excavation at several points along its length. Lidar analysis has suggested alternative routes at the north and south end of the road, most significantly that it continued through Wellingborough.

Full Description
{1} Continuation of Route 570, Lowick to Irchester. This road is ill-recorded, but such evidence as exists would suggest that it ran from the 57a near Lowick along the west side of the River Nene to Irchester. It is thus either the continuation of the Roman road 570, or an alternative route to Irchester, if the suggestion of The Viatores that 570 ran through Thrapston and Raunds is accepted.
{3} Re-evaluation of the course of the Roman road between Thrapston and Wellingborough identified two possible new routes. Suggestion that the road continues through Wellingborough at its southern end, incorporating sitings of road observed in Wellingborough with the suggestion that it continues west to Duston. At the north end an alternative route is proposed through Islip.
