Abstract/Summary

Pre-Construct Archaeology was commissioned by All Saints Church Wilbarston Parochial Church Council to undertake an archaeological watching brief at All Saints Church, Church Street, Wilbarston, Northamptonshire. The fieldwork was required to investigate the potential for archaeological remains during a series of groundworks associated with the construction of a single storey side extension located on the north side of the church. The ground works consisted of a foundation trench and associated services for which permission has been granted by Kettering Borough Council/Diocese of Peterborough; faculty (reference 6840) and planning permission (reference KET/2019/0354). Within the foundation trench for the extension, a single grave cut was noted, the western end of which was recorded in the foundation trench. Elsewhere within the foundation trench two further pits were recorded which appeared to have been excavated to rebury disarticulated bones from previously disturbed graves. Two further cuts were identified during the excavation of the service trench extension, and whilst their dimensions and orientation were suggestive of graves, no articulated human remains were noted at the depths excavated for the service trench. Elsewhere the archaeological monitoring identified occasional disarticulated remains, which were reburied locally to the point of recovery during the course of the fieldwork.
