Abstract/Summary

Archaeological excavation was carried out in March 1995 in connection with the proposed redevelopment of a former car park at the southern end of Sheaf Street, on the corner with new Street. The work was undertaken for the NCC Planning and Transportation Dept Heritage Branch. Two trial trenches showed that any medieval street frontage which might have existed along Sheaf Street had been removed by a combination of medieval iron-stone quarrying and recent development. No trace of north-south aligned plots were present. The earliest dateable structural remains were of the 16th century or later.
