Full Description

{1}Trial excavation undertaken to look for possible medieval frontage along Sheaf Street, Daventry - no evidence found due to later quarrying and building development.,

{2}Two trial trenches indicated that the frontage of the old A45 road had been largely obliterated by recent cellarage and late medieval stone quarrying. Buildings on the frontage demolished within the last 20 years could not be older than 16th century, the date when the quarry was backfilled.,

{3}Any previous medieval frontage along Sheaf Street had been removed by the combination of Medieval ironstone-quarrying and recent development. Additionally, no trace of north-south aligned plots were present, with the earliest dateable structural remains being 16th century or later.
