Abstract/Summary
Desk absed study, geophysical survey and trial excavation were carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology ahead of proposed development at the kitchen garden, Fineshade Abbey. Examination of historical maps suggest that the application area was originally sited within a former rabbit warren (conygre) and later re-used as a kitchen garden. The application area lies to the north of the Fineshade Abbey previously 'Hywel Castle' which was demolished in c1200. During the Roman and medieval periods the immediate environs had a history of ironworking. Trial excavation revealing a series of slag deposits and a single iron smelting furnace dating to Roman period.
