Abstract/Summary

Archaeological evaluation of a plot of land fronting onto the east side of Vicar Lane, Daventry revealed three levels of archaeology, each one having damaged its predecessor. Cut into the natural clay were the only surviving features of medieval date, comprising ditches and hollows. Above some of these lay buildings of 17th-century date which stood until the mid-19th century. After their destruction a railway embankment and terrace were laid out across the site. The embankment sealed the earlier remains at the west of the site while the terracing substantially removed them at the centre and east of the site.
