Full Description

{1} Post-medieval structural remains encountered during the evaluation may relate to the farm buildings that were ampped in 1803 {5}. From the evidence of their floors they appear to have been constructed in the 17th century. Their construction had entailed the clearance down to the natural clay of anything which might have stood on the site previously. They were destroyed in the 19th century.

{2}Walls observed during watching brief probably forms the southern gable end of a building noted in earlier evaluation. Features contained pottery of 18th and 19th century including course wares, transfer printed wrds and Nottingham salt-glaze wares.,

{3}Series of walls of different periods, brick and stone, may have been a single building complex. Two iron stone walls 4 and 5were dated by pottery to be early 17th century and brick wall 3 dated 19th century. There was a single composite foundation 6 dated 19th century. The dates when they were built are indicated by pottery recovered from the floors and make up layers between them. These overlay natural clay. The building was built over an earlier pit dated late 16th/early 17th.The building therefore was thought to have started in the 17th century and improved in brick before being destroyed in the 19th. The 1997 watching brief encounted more of this building.
