SNN45726 - Archaeological Work on the Brigstock Bypass, 1985

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the early construction phase of Brigstock Bypass. The objectives were two-fold; firstly, to record any archaeological sites that may be revealed along the two mile route, and secondly to locate and record the Huntingdon to Leicester Roman road. Trenches were cut on the presumed line of the road but no trace was found. Subsequent observation at the south end of the bypass, during soil stripping, confirmed that no road metalling or roadside ditches survived on , or near, the previously considered line of the road. Fieldwalking revealed a widespread distribution of Iron Age, Roman and Anglo Saxon pottery.
