Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Heritage has advised that an archaeological evaluation should be carried out on the site of a proposed new farm on 0.07 hectares of land at Field Barn, Banbury Lane, King’s Sutton (N.G.R. SP 49843734), the subject of an application for planning permission from Mr R. Harper, Figs 1–3. This requirement was based on the grounds that the development site lies within an Archaeological Priority Area and specifically on a cropmark believed to represent a Roman road running east from King’s Sutton Roman town which is situated some 500 m west of the development site, Figs 3 and 4. The specific objectives set out by Northamptonshire Heritage are to establish if any Romano-British remains exist within the application site, and if so to determine their date, character, extent, state of preservation, depth of burial and relationship to the cropmark. The required strategy involved a programme of trial trenching and a metal detector survey. A set of proposals for this work (see Fig. 5) was submitted to Northamptonshire Heritage and their approval granted on 21st August 1997. Site work began on 6th September 1997 and back-filling was completed on 16th September 1997.
