Full Description

{1} No trace of the linear cropmark was found during trial excavation. If a roadway ever crossed the site of the excavation it must have been completely ploughed away and it therefore seems unlikely that any substantial flanking ditches could have existed, at least along the eastern end of the cropmark. No other traces of Roman activity were found, apart from one pot sherd in a plough-furrow (which had been redeposited). According to the landowner a gas pipeline was laid across the field "20 years ago" presumably the straight cropmark running SE-NW across the field.

{2} 2 parallel ditches running east-west across field; possible road to Romano-British settlement at Blackgrounds; other ditches in field; trackway has possible internal metalling; linear features cutting across are possibly modern drains.

{3} The cropmark evidence suggests two main phases for the settlement. The second is of intensive Romano-British occupation, comprising several metalled roads converging 100m to the north west of the presumed nucleus of Iron Age activity. The main road would appear to be that running approximately east-west, along which are aligned a number of enclosures and traces of stone buildings. It is, however, clear from the way in which a number of cropmark features cross and the change in alignment of the east-west road near the centre of the site that there is a long and far more complex sequence to be unravelled.
