Abstract/Summary

Seven ditches, five potential postholes and a single pit survived in the south-eastern part of the site at depths of 400mm and 700mm below modern ground level. The stone footings of a potentially medieval wall also survive on the edge of the former hollow way. The general scarcity of features and character of the site stratification does not suggest intensive domestic occupation. A single horizon of medieval cultivation soil was identified and the two ditches were interpreted as boundaries of agricultural land parcels, with the settlement around the castle rather than its bailey.
