Description

{1} Trial excavation was carried out on land near Bozeat, Northamptonshire (centred on SP897600) between November-December 1996 as part of the continuing archaeological evaluation of a proposed mineral extraction site. In order to verify the low archaeological potential of Fields 1 and 4 a series of 69 individual test pits, each c.5m x 2m, was excavated on a regular grid. None of the test pits excavated in Field 1 contained archaeological evidence. This was also the case in the eastern part of Field 4, however closer to the identified archaeological focus in the western part of the field 11 test pits were succesfull. A total of 21 linear trenches was excavated, each targetting specific geophysical anomalies or discrete concentrations of pottery finds identified from fieldwalking. [HER note 28/10/2014: HER mapping of the test pits and trenches does not appear to be of a high qualilty, although their locations are fair.]
