Abstract/Summary

Trial excavation was carried out on land near Bozeat, Northamptonshire (centred on SP897600) between November-December 1996 as part of the continuing archaeological evaluation of a proposed mineral extraction site (Fig 1). The results confirm the evidence of previous desk-based study and subsequent geophysical and fieldwalking surveys. The western fringe of the application site contains part of an extensive late Iron Age/Roman enclosure system. Traces of smaller scale early-middle Saxon occupation are also present. Prolonged cultivation since the Middle Ages however, has destroyed all earlier archaeological deposits above the natural geology and the upper parts of natural cut features such as ditches and postholes have been truncated. Discrete areas of deeper accumulation of medieval ploughsoil and perhaps underlying water-borne sediments have been identified.
