ENN10694 - Irchester Roman Town, 1878-9 (Excavation)

The Rev Baker gives an account of his discoveries in 1878 from the excavations carried out across the Roman town between June and November. His excavations are only summarised with little detail, much of which survives as notes on the plan of his excavations. The works found the south and west gateways and believed the east gate to be under the then farm track. Much of the work was in small excavation pits or trenches and further work was the result of the probing of Mr Fairless Barber of Yorkshire who assisted Baker in his exploration.
