Description

Site code: WESL13. Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned by VE Parrott/East Midlands Housing Association Ltd to conduct an archaeological evaluation on land at the former Sunlight Laundry site, Buckwell End, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, prior to proposed residential development on the site. Much of the site has been severely truncated by modern industrial activity associated with the laundry. However, in some areas the archaeological remains had survived to a good level. Further remains were observed in the house footings. Early medieval gullies, possibly relating to domestic tenement plots fronting onto Buckwell End/Short Lane, were recorded. Larger boundary ditches and a possible well were recorded on the northern side of the site, dating to the 11th-12th centuries. Pottery analysis suggests the main focus of activity occurred in the early medieval period with a hiatus around the 13th century and later activity into the later medieval and post-medieval periods. Information from OASIS Online Form.
