Description

{1} Nelson’s Yard at Towcester, Northamptonshire, lies just within the circuit of the defences of the Roman town of Lactodorum. A proposed redevelopment of the site, partly overlies the earthwork remains of the former rampart and ditch; the ditch is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (county no 112). Archaeological trial excavation indicates that the site has been built up to the east with modern soil deposits which cover any ancient remains to a depth of up to 1m. The depth of overburden decreases gradually westward to 300mm at the highest point of the earthwork bank.
