Abstract/Summary

Nelson’s Yard at Towcester, Northamptonshire, lies just within the circuit of the defences of the Roman town of Lactodorum. A proposed redevelopment of the site, partly overlies the earthwork remains of the former rampart and ditch; the ditch is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (county no 112). Previous research has shown that the defences of Roman, late Saxon and 17th-century date survive in the area, together with the remains of domestic occupation form throughout the Roman period. Since the rear of Nelson’s Yard has remained largely untouched by development it is likely that similar remains might occur. Archaeological trial excavation indicates that the site has been built up to the east with modern soil deposits which cover any ancient remains to a depth of up to 1m. The depth of overburden decreases gradually westward to 300mm at the highest point of the earthwork bank.
