Full Description

{1} C17 refronted C18, perhaps incorporating earlier structure of house, known as Abbot's house, belonging to Peterborough monastery. Ironstone squared rubble and ashlar, stone slated and concrete tiled gabled roof with stone copings and front parapet. 2 storeys and attics, gabled dormer. L plan, 4 sash windows with glazing bars to front elevation, ashlar faced with flat arches. Back wing has 6 light stone mullioned ground floor casement window under dripmould. Carved shield below centre of parapet. C19 lower 2 storey 1 casement wing on left.

{3} Grade II* listed building 'Manor House' on site of former manor. May incorporate earlier structure of house.

{4} Located in the manor house, the town's museum includes a range of industrial exhibits, including boot and shoe making machinery and displays on the local industries including brickmaking and ironworking.

{6} A level 3 building recording survey was undertaken prior to renovation of the museum. Cartographic evidence suugests that the former manor house was once much larger and it is likely that extensive demolition has taken place. The rear range is of a slightly later phase, but perhaps only by 50 years. Afer its conversion into a museum in the 1980s, a large stone, cast-iron, timber and glass extension wrapped around the back of the house to create larger exhibition spaces.
