Summary

{1} Church. Early C14-C15. Coursed ironstone rubble, ironstone ashlar, lead roof. Chancel, with north chapel, nave and north aisle, west tower. Perpendicular east window to chancel, 3 lights with panel tracery. 3-light Perpendicular windows in south wall of chancel and early C14 two-light window with Y-tracery low down to left of them. South wall of nave has in the east bay a large 3-light Perpendicular window with square head and panel tracery. Early C14 two-light window with Y-tracery to right of the porch. C14 porch has arch with continuous hollow mouldings. C19 window to left of porch. Perpendicular west tower of two stages with crenellated parapet has large double bell openings, each of two cusped lights with transom, both under one hood. C14 west window with C19 tracery to north aisle. Early C14 lancet west of porch. Perpendicular porch has doorway with 4-centred arch. Inner doorway has chamfered round headed arch and old ribbed plank door. 3-light Perpendicular window with 4-centred head to left of porch. Other windows in north wall of the north aisle are Perpendicular, of 3 lights with panel tracery and square heads. 3-light Decorated window with reticulated tracery in east wall of north chapel. Interior: 7-bay north arcade c.1300, has octagonal piers and arches with one hollow chamfer and one sunk quadrant. C14 chancel arch: Decorated north chapel has 3-bay arcade opening to chancel with octagonal piers and double hollow chamfered arches. Recess in south wall with crocketed ogee arch and pinnacles, and piscina in cusped arch with crocketed hood. C14 roofs in chancel and north aisle. Monument to Thomas Wylmer, died 1580 and his family against north wall of the north chapel has Ionic columns, fluted pilasters and entablature with metope frieze framing brass plate with kneeling figures.

The stone church, consisting of chancel, north chapel nave and clerestory, north aisle, north and south porches, and W. tower, is mainly Decorated and Perpendicular, with Norman north door. The chancel has Perpendicular windows and roof, and a Decorated arcade of 3 arches leading to the N. chapel. This is Decorated with a contemporary timber roof, a Decorated east window and piscina, and a Perpendicular window on the north wall. The roof
has cusped bracers and brackets and carved bosses. The nave has a Decorated N. arcade of 6 narrow bays, the
clerestory and roof are Perpendicular, and the Perpendicular windows include a large one on the S. wall. At the west end is a tall tower arch. Both porches are Perpendicular, the south is now used as a vestry, the north has a good timber roof. The west tower has 3 stages, diagonal buttresses, large windows to the bell-chamber, and battlemented parapet, and is Decorated. The church was restored at various dated between 1884 and 1910.
The monuments include one of stone to Thomas Wylmer and wife, 1580, in the north chapel - outer fluted Doric pilasters supporting entablature with frieze of triglyphs and roundels, broken forward in centre and supported on engaged Ionic columns. Central brass with kneeling figures and tan children, with central coat of arms over, all in arched panel with architrave. The monument stands on a panelled plinth, broken forward under columns.
Over the south door in nave is a monument to the Darby family, 1766, standing on a bracketted base with carved apron and consisting of an arched white marble panel with grey architrave, white springers and key block, flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters of veined white marble supporting broken entablature with urn finials, the centre part carried up in curved pyramid shape with foliage supporting large urn.
