Full Description
{1} Rectory, now conference centre and rectory. c.1693 for John Palmer and date plaque P.W.M./1778. Lias ashlar with slate roof laid to diminishing courses. Double-depth plan. Entrance front of 7-window range arranged 1:5:1. Nine-panelled door is one bay to right of centre. Fanlight has intersecting glazing bars. Sash windows with glazing bars, some with crown glass and narrow wooden pilasters forming architraves. Curved stone lintels with keyblocks and foliage decoration to first floor centre windo . is verandah to centre on raised stone terrace. Rusticated quoins, and flat string courses between floors. Lead date plaque to left of entrance. Curved cornice and 3 flat-topped roof dormers. Hipped roof with stone stacks at ridge corners. Late C18 single-storey, 2-window range extensions to left and right of main front have sash windows under flat stone arches with plain panelled parapet above. Range of late C17 buildings attached to rear left have ashlar gable parapets. Rear and . have some leaded cross windows and circular staircase windows. Interior: hall has open fireplace with moulded wood surround having a broken pediment with a bust of John Palmer by Rysbrack similar to that in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Ecton (q.v.). Late C17 staircase with half-landing and turned balusters. Fielded-panelled dado to hall and staircase and applied panelling to staircase walls. Some 6-panelled doors and panelled window reveals. Armorial glass to Palmer famil . indows.
