Summary

A complex of ditched enclosures and ring ditches of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Located in a field S of Greenfield Lodge, the complex extends over an area about 350 metres N-S and 290 metres W-E and comprises a curvilinear ditch, attached which are a number of enclosures. Adjacent are two further ring ditches and other linear ditch sections. Fieldwalking survey has recovered Roman pottery and building stone from the north-western part of the complex.

Full Description

{1} (SP 927718). The site is a possible Romano-British building indicated by castor ware and other pottery.

{2} SP 910 604 Fieldwalking recovered Romano-British pot sherds and fragments of building stone.

{5} A complex of ditched enclosures and ring ditches of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in a field about 300 metres S of Greenfield Lodge and centred at SP 91120 60396, the complex extends over an area about 350 metres N-S and 290 metres W-E. A clothes line enclosure comprises a curvilinear 365 metres long WNW-S aligned linear ditch, attached to which is fragments of at least two partial rectangular enclosures, adjacent to which is a rectangular ditched enclosure about 34.5 x 57.5 metres: immediately south of this is a double ditched D-shaped enclosure (NRHE 347168) and a further 87 metres S is a 14.5 metres square ditched enclosure. Adjacent are two further ring ditches about 13 and 15 metres in diameter and other linear ditch sections.

{6} Mr Hall described the first site as a small occupation. The cropmark is of a ring ditch at SP 91156034, and is apparently not associated. Now under crop.
