The Northampton Arm was built under the terms of the Grand Junction Canal Act of 1793. Work finally started in 1812 and was completed in 1815.

Full Description

{1} Gayton Junction is where the heavily-locked 5 mile long branch canal to the River Nene in Northampton begins. It opened in 1815, with a total of 17 locks falling over 30m, replacing a horse-worked railed way which was used from 1805.

{4} The Northampton Arm was built under the terms of the Grand Junction Canal Act of 1793. Work finally started in 1812 and was completed in 1815. During the interim a temporary tramway provided overland carriage of goods. The Northampton arm runs from Gayton Junction 4.75 miles to the Nene near Bridge Foot. 17 locks were required to accomplish the 109ft decent, 13 locks forming the Rothersthorpe Flight.
