Summary

Settlement Remains lie on the south-east side of the present village street on land sloping south-east. into a narrow steep-sided valley. The remains fall into three separate areas; at the south-west end of the village, south-east of Wilby House; further north-east immediately east and south-east of the manor house and to the north-east again, behind the George public house.

Full Description

{1} Area at SP867658 was occupied by houses in 1834.

{2} Documentary references to the shrunken village of Wilby; area at SP867658 was occupied by houses in 1801.

{8} Drawing and description of brass articles found near Wilby bridge;

{9} Settlement remains centred SP 868660. Rectangular raised platforms at SP 867658 were the sites of buildings in 1801. At SP 869660 ploughing has destroyed part of an area of earthwork scarps and closes, revealing dry stone foundations. E. of this infilling of a small valley has created a flat area with a 3m scarp on its S.E. side. Other earthworks suggest hollow ways and former ponds. 12th to 14th century pottery has been found behind the George public house (SP 869662).
