Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} A layer of demolition rubble consisting of limestone and tile fragments was seen.

{2} A foundation trench for a stone building within which the lower course of a stone wall c.1m wide was seen. Only the south western corner of the wall lay within the excavated area. This wall was heavily robbed with only part of the corner surviving.
A demolition/ collapse layer, consisting of limestone rubble, stone roof tile fragments and terracotta ridge tile fragments overlay the wall. The layer was dated by pottery to the mid 14th century.

{7} The stone wall previously excavated was re-exposed and further investigation carried out. It proved to be founded on the bedrock and was c.1.6m high. It had a rubble core with no obvious bonding in the loose lower portion. The upper courses appeared to have a degraded clay bond. Robber pits were found at both ends of this wall, but could not be dated.
Parallel to this, another wall was seen, constructed of roughly-faced limestone fragments. A projecting plinth course was immediately above the base of this wall. The wall had also been heavily robbed.

{11} Finds included pieces of antler together with was appears to be part of a late-medieval stone window seat.
