Full Description

{1} Double Ring Ditch or Barrow. Air photographs (in NMR, and CUAP, YX 95) show cropmarks of a double ring ditch with diameters of 18 m and 40 m, which is cut by a ditch of the [Iron Age/Roman] settlement. The barrow mound survives, 28m in diam. and 0.5m high. The inner ditch is narrow, the outer one much wider.
Roman Settlement. Traces of a ditched trackway, perhaps forming a T-shaped junction, two small enclosures, one with a large pit inside it and the other with a clear entrance on the N., as well as a number of indeterminate ditches, are visible on air photographs. A small quantity of Roman pottery has been found in the S.E. part of the site (SP SP 8117 7126).

{2} Fieldwalking in 1968, to check the site of a ring ditch recorded from aerial photography in 1966. A large, low mound was clearly visible in the field. A sparse scatter of Romano-British coarse ware sherds was found just south of the barrow mound.

{3} Roman pottery found to the south of the barrow mound.

{4} A known cropmark site yielded a few Iron Age and Romano-British pottery sherds. SP811713.

{5} NCCAP:SP8171/001+8-14.

{6} A ring cropmark at SP 811713 was photographed by R Hollowell of Upper Nene Archaeol Soc in 1966.

{7} Cropmark visible on RAF Aps at SP 81137127, and another at SP 83757146 (probably an old quarry).

{8} Marks of authority {7} are both quarries.

{9} (SP 811713). A double ditch ring enclosure on AP in 1979.
