Full Description

{1} There were five holdings in Ashley in 1086, of which three were held by sokemen. A fourth holding was for bond-tenants but had no demesne.

Western part of the village called Westhorpe toady laid out around a small green, probably partly encroached upon prior to 1806. The eastern end of the village is more irregular and, while there is evidence of small-scale encroachment on the waste, possible that the curved road represents the fossilised remains of a large enclosure (possibly similar to the oval middle Saxon enclosure excavated at Higham Ferrers). However, earthworks of former buildings within the enclosure are of rectilinear form and the curve may be the result of extensive encroachment on a rectilinear green.
