Full Description

{1} The evaluation identified evidence for the C19th/C20th quarrying in the northern part of the site, within Trenches 1-5. This appears to have been limited to areas where the natural chalk limestone was prevalent. It clearly targeted the limestone natural suggesting that this was the primary deposit for extraction. It is likely that the limestone was sourced for construction material.

{2} To the east of the area, in Trenches 5 and 6, below the topsoil was a mixed deposit of disturbed sandy clay containing frequent limestone fragments. This appears to relate to the back-filling of the open cast quarrying known to have taken place on the site. It is not known when this quarrying took place however, but the evaluation demonstrates that it was more extensive than quarrying records indicate.

HER note 30/10/2014: the quarries are not shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey 6 Inch series (1880s) and therefore it seems unlikely that they predate this. It is possible that they were worked by Staveley in the early C20th as part of their 21 year lease of land from the Harpur Estate.
