Full Description

{1} The main building is typical in plan-form of the Georgian period with the few stylistic elements remaining suggestive of the later Georgian/Regency period characterized by reeded surrounds. It has undergone significant alteration from its inception, with replacement windows, at least some replacement fireplaces and an infilled, brick arch opening within the kitchen, potentially suggestive of an earlier extension. An ‘’L-shaped’ range was subsequently connected to the building via a door from the kitchen to provide a number of work rooms including a cold store with its slate shelves and bakehouse with both a bread oven and a number of coppers for heating water. A number of later features remain related to the running of the house including a clothes drying rack above the fireplace, servants bells and a meat safe in the cellar. The cellar contains elements suggestive of an earlier date; both the vaulted form and the windows with their stone mullions. It may be that this is the remaining section of an earlier building that was replaced above ground or elements were reused from elsewhere. Unfortunately a lack of any earlier maps of the area means this cannot be further explored.
