Full Description
{1} Earthwork shown to the north of Brigstock.
{2} Identifies this site as that of a defended searchlight site. Documentary ref to the battery is in PRO War Diary of 32 AA Bde 1942 WO166/7389. The grid reference for this is identified by AA as being SP94818602.
{3} SMR check reveals AP recorded earthworks (SMR Mon 8571/0/2) immediately to S; some of these are Morph identified as an AA battery. In fact these are almost certainly earthworks of the searchlight site of which the pillbox is a part. Two ‘V’ shaped earthworks may be defensive slit trenches. Some earthworks destroyed by construction of the Brigstock bypass post 1985; current condition of remainder not determined. Inspection from roadside 10.1.2002 by G Cadman confirmed that the fields both sides of the road are under pasture; not possible to inspect either field in detail but some earthworks of undetermined origin are present in that to N of road; more detailed inspection required;
Two features provisionally identified as representing parts of a single S/L (new re-integrated). Both survived as earthworks when photographed. They are identified solely on the basis of their form as identified by P Markham (1996/7) from aerial photographs utilising MORPH (an RCHME National Mapping Programme database). That at SP 94698598 (Morph no 88 2 4) has a diameter of 20m; the diameter of that at SP94688594 (Morph No 88 2 5) is not identified. Neither feature has been verified by a site visit.
{4}Documentary reference to Searchlight Battery at MGR 74/403055. Appendix of War Diary details location every S/L in their area (N of Grantham to E coast) due to achange in the system of numbering in 1942. Prefixes of old numbers make it possible to cross refernce them to location statements. Brigstock old number WT.095B (ie 362 Bty, 41 S/L Regt); new number 267B;
