Type and Period (1)
Full Description
{1} Nominal roll of inhabitants of township of Wadenhoe - assessment for taxation with amounts paid after their names.
{3} The isolated church on the hill, associated with the defended site may represent the original focus of the settlement which has later expanded down to the present village location.
{4} Irregularities in the field to the W and also to the NE of the church are suggestive of the original site of this village.
{5} There was an earlier ("Domesday") village N of the church along the Aldwicle road; it had disappeared by the 17th c when the present village was built, the site of which is due to a stone outcrop.
{6} The "irregularities" noted by authority{4} are the result of extensive quarrying which occupied a large area adjacent to the church. Wadenhoe is an active village and no surface evidence for shrinkage or desertion was found. The village is not mentioned in 'Northants. Deserted Md villages" (Beresford).
Evans (entry 4) is right about desertion to the NE of the church. [See HER no 2266/1].
